Many erotica writers do seem to favour putting a hot guy on the cover. Maybe his jeans are undone a little... he's usually shirtless, muscles rippling, and he's always good looking...
On the other hand, there are a good number of erotica titles with a a hot hunk busy with a hot chick on the cover. Very little clothing is required for these two, the message is clear, it's boy on girl and it's hot...
Then there's the cover art with two women having a good time.... A clear message and it make sense, lesbian erotica wants to find the right readers...
Let's not forget guy on guy, BDSM, threesomes... the artwork choice is so important.
You'll also find erotica cover art with just a female on the cover. The message here? Well, in my mind, it tells the would be reader that it's just for her. It says it's all about her and her pleasure. That's not to say that the story or stories don't have any guys in, it's just making it clear that the book is going to be a treat, a delicious indulgence...
I chose to use a woman only on my erotica cover art for my first two books, as you can see here with my first book, Private Pleasures: The Collection.
(You can see all three book covers on the left of this blog.)
So no definitive answers from me I'm afraid! Within erotica as a genre there are so many sub-categories that the cover art can be crucial to getting across the right message. It's up to us, as authors, to try and decide what we think will work for us each time.
What are your thoughts on erotica cover art? Are you a writer of erotica? What do you favour for your cover art? Or perhaps you're a reader of erotica? What attracts you and why?
With no clear answer, it's still always a pleasure to view the many different book covers for erotica, and enjoy the authors' creativeness.
Until the next time,
Honey McGregor
